Piecemeal reforms
The quest for reform in Jordan has been plagued by piecemeal, sporadic and disconnected reforms and the relative retardation of mainstream institutions. The battle that emerged between the reform minded, powerful as they may be, and those who were neglected by the reform and tagged as helpless, is all too painful; the victim, Jordanian reform efforts.
The apparent…

Learning on the job
The way forward for Arab countries is not to focus on attracting foreign direct investment, but on creating a better educated and trained labor force. Otherwise, not only foreign but also domestic investors will continue to favor the developed West, Asian tigers and emerging economies. Domestically, investment will continue to flow…

Who and why unemployed
In 2011, 3.5 million Jordanians were eligible for work but only 1.4 million were economically active. Between 2005 and 2009, 63 per cent of jobs created went to expatriates working and living in Jordan, while 180,000 Jordanians were unemployed.
Looking at the average unemployment rate between 2005 and…

Brain drain - gain and bane
Exporters of labour are Syria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Morocco. Occasionally, policy makers in these countries boast of the significant benefits their economies gain from such a precious export as human capital. The importers of labour are primarily the oil states…

Employing women
Not only is unemployment in Jordan chronically high, data also shows a great bias against women in terms of employment opportunities. Moreover, in several years, there is a noted tradeoff between the employment of women and men: women are laid off to hire men instead, which is evidence that women not only suffer the most in economic downturns but also that we live in a strangely sexist culture despite constant assertions to the contrary. Since 2000, unemployment has hovered between a high of…

Liberating higher education
It is common knowledge that, in general, the level of education at Jordanian universities has fallen in recent years. Graduates of Jordanian universities are more likely to be unemployed than those with a high school level education.
Maybe it is time for us to come clean on higher education: it is falling.
A major overhaul of the higher education system is warranted and highly overdue.
One reason for the dismal results is decreased spending by government on this…
