Just wanted to thank you for your tax piece in Al-ghad. The influence of the financial sector, namely banks, on "decision making" in our country is just unbelievable. One more thing, what do you think of the central bank move? Basem El salem's comments last week on the government urging and coordinating with the central bank to lower interest rate resulted the lowering of the interest rate. What is inetresting is that Omayya Toukan commented that "we live in a democracy and everyone is entitled to his opinion" refering to Al-salems comments. I mean, you can sense from his tone that he is not in favor of lowering the rates, but later the central bank moved and lowered the rates! Is this a clue that the central bank is not actually independent? If so, isn't that dangerous?

Looking forward to reading more of your take on the issue.
It is interesting to see that while the chicago school of economics policies has failed in their own backyard, their desciples in jordan are still as loyal as they ever were!

Thank you for that! Joining in on the effort sounds like a good idea on my part, because while you have the resources to conduct research, we can help get your research findings ‘out there’ – ie. make them accessible and get them debated. Obviously la sharaf fil qatil is still in its early stages, and I won’t be back in Amman till June, but I think it’s worth considering how both initiatives can work together so that, hopefully, we can finally address this issue.
The next stage of la sharaf fil qatil will involve starting a facebook group to make the logo and aims of the campaign public and recognizable. I also noticed that there is a feature that allows adding groups into the Urdun Mubdi3 network, so it might be worth forming one there too (if that is ok with you?). Any preliminary findings you have would be helpful in these pages as they would help highlight the severity of the issue.
Any other suggestions you have would be very valuable to our team. Thank you again!

Dear Yusuf,
Thanks for the invit. I hope to be able to contribute from time to time - most probably with shorter postings about lessons that we in DK have learned from. The other day after your article I was looking for material on how we want to transform DK inot a creative economy - but I didn't come up with much - mostly it is taken as a given that we are already one - which is partly but not totally true. But I'll keep digging.

Lets have lunch early january - I am going to the UAE for Masdar and meetings with danish (and Jordanian) business people so I want to get my jordan economic perspetive right before going.

Best - and happy New Year

Thomas

Jordan is not Dubai

Two years ago, it would have been odd to use such a title for a column here. But at least for this week, it is most opportune to remind us all that Jordan is not Dubai.

Having said this, we should not write off the Dubai economy, which this analyst believes will rise again.

Dubai, which for over a decade has been making headlines as the model envied worldwide, is back in the limelight, but this time for a different reason: the UAE government asked creditors of Dubai World, a government-backed… Continue

Paying Taxes 2010 - The Global Picture
This is the fifth year that the World Bank Group’s Doing Business project has included the "paying taxes" indicator. The indicator measures the ease of paying taxes in 183 economies around the world. Besides paying taxes, the Doing Business project provides quantitative measures of regulations in nine other areas: starting a business, dealing with construction permits, employing workers, registering property, getting credit, protecting investors, trading ac… Continue

Recovery awaits

The writing is on the wall: the world’s greatest economic crisis in seven decades is over and the world is going into recovery. Jordan cannot and will not be left behind. We should have never been adversely affected, and we should quickly start to recover.

The fact that the world did not suffer as great a depression as initially envisioned is due to strategic and courageous actions and fixes taken by world economic leaders.

Inaction on the home front brought Jordan into disarray. The economic… Continue
