WTF!!!!
Someone once said, "I am never ashamed of my country but I allow myself to shed a few tears for it every now and then". This is how I feel after reading this. And I am livid at the people we have placed at the helm for such stupidities.
Mediocrity and the lack of wisdom have permeated the political, social and economic landscape. Every aspect of our life is being derogated in a haphazard manner. Are we so worried who si Jordanian and who is not? Why aren’t the Americans and the Canadians? Did I, by becoming a US citizen hurt the US economy by working there, publishing, teaching and working my…off. No, but when given the nationality I was able to plan long term and produce for a country that adopted me and for that I owe a debt of gratitude. Let no Jordanian question the Jordanianness of another; this is how hypocrisy is made and produced. To withdraw a right that ahs been given by government is a fatal error. It makes the government look foolish, opens the door for political subversion, and makes more than half the population uneasy.
Who in this country can question another’s love for Jordan? No body and let’s keep it that way. The fact this racism has persisted is in itself shameful. No Jordanian is better than another, and this whole loyalty business is hogwash.
How dare anyone think it is ok to withdraw someone’s life from him? Does anyone care?
So Jordan has such an abundance of human capital and decided to give the surgeon to Canada which welcomed him with open arms. Who is more developed, us or Canada? Bad policies, myopic views and lost vision, make it intolerable
Had I been in government I would have provided citizenships to many of the Iraqi refugees that came to Jordan had they asked for it. Instead we treated most of them like a money box that we couldn’t wait to empty. The developed world took them in, world class artists, engineers, doctors and professors. How much more developed Jordan would have been had we not been so stupid is a rhetorical question. Instead we rented them property and sold them real estate at exuberant prices. How foolish and short sighted we are.
At a recent lecture I gave at one of Jordan’s legit political parties last week, someone asked me who is responsible. I said, “We all are. Every time you view your own interest above that of the country you have sold the present and future of Jordan a little.”
Nadine and others like her pay the price for speaking every day and they continue to do it, not because they don’t know which side is their bread buttered at but because they have a deeper love for this country than most, or have simply decided that the future of Jordan should not be sold to special and self interest.
Mohanned: I once insisted that we keep criticism out of this positive forward looking network, but I take it all back. let it rip.
I think that "Origin" became so entrenched in our understanding of the term identity that we forgot what identity really means..In Jordan the term "origin" carry many benefits for some while being a burden for others.. If you are from the east bank of jordan, your life will be much easier, you will probably get a governmental job or work in the "security" apparatus..Your sons and daughters will have a better chance of getting into a public university where they experience first hand the creation of their "identity"..Once you lived in this circle you become an integral part of it, you try to "protect" your "rights" from those "unloyal" others..Consider it our own version of the Affirmative action...In the end it is all about self interest..What we perceive becomes our "reality"..The propaganda machine and the Half a$$ed "journalists" also have their fair share of the blame...
Self interest is not always a bad thing, but when self interest becomes everything we are in a danger zone.I think we, in Jordan, reached a point where self interest became part of the national identitieS.
We are in the churning mode..Everything in Jordan became part of this process, from homes to schools to unis to the work place...
Oh..Did we even talk about accountability!

"And you'd probably think to yourself: aren't thirty six years of hard work, love and allegiance enough to prove worthiness of trust?!
"
To who? By whom? Why?
This defeated attitude will get you nowhere..Claim what is yours..You are a human being first and last..Origin means nothing.
You asked Why now?
This is my thesis..King Abdullah is not King Hussein. He is more focused on local issues unlike his father who was more interested in regional issues. King Abdullah is not an economist, he is also just one man. His team pursued what some term "neo-liberal" policies..In jordan we now have two governments...The king's team couldn't have just come in and shook everything up..They had to create a parallel government to pursue the polices they advocate for..Committees began to pop up, temporary laws were passed like there is no tomorrow..Some people felt threatened..The pie grew and those who wanted a piece also increased in numbers..Flashback: Awadalla case..
To make a long story short: The king had to backtrack on many of "his" policies..Powerhouses in Jordan proved too powerful to tackle at once..What you see now is just one line in the invisible debate(Better called:struggle) happening in jordan..The system wants to show "east bankers" that they are still the backbone of the country and that their "share" won't be touched..Yet at the same time just yesterday Prince Hussein was named Crown prince.. The future king of jordan has jordanian mother of palastenian origin..
Right of return? Really? Who in their right mind believes that Israel will allow any Palestinian to return to the Jewish state? The regime in Jordan Chose the path of Peace, this choice encompass many things one of which is that "logically" israel will not allow palastenians to return..Why some choose not to see this is beyond my abilities..Either they are delusional or I am stupid enough not to see what they see.
Palastenian State anytime soon? Don't think so..
Reform in Jordan? Not anytime soon..Why? Because this is the stated policy: Reform in Jordan is somehow connected to the creation of Palestinian state! As if when this happens people will be standing in line "declaring" their loyalty and allegiance(I don't know why this brings images of the afterlife where people either go to heaven or hell)..Those who say I am Jordanian get to stay..Those who don't will "simply" cross the border and receive their new palastenian passports!!!
What else? The naming of Prince Hussein is also a message to observers that the regime is stable and its desires remain unchallenged or even debated..

“A prejudice is an implicitly held belief, often about a group of people. Race, economic class, gender or sex, ethnicity, sexual orientation, age and religion are other common subjects of prejudice. It can be used to characterize beliefs about other things as well, including "any unreasonable attitude that is unusually resistant to rational influence."Wikipedia
Prejudice creates mindsets that classify a whole people into one group and assumes behaviours about all of them. An educated mind should reject such a simplistic approach and despise its advocates, reasoning and consequences. One of the world’s greatest mathematical minds (sorry his name is too difficult to recall) who did exceptionally well and found fame and acceptance in the UK found rejection in his home country because he was perceived to be of a lower cast and ended up dying, possibly of heart break over his new reality in his ancestral home.
Let me share with you a story of my cab ride from Amman to Mu’ta University Karak where I used to teach in 1994 and, thus, commuted almost daily. The cab driver assumed because of my accent that I was from a certain clan and proceeded to cut down a certain religious group, then made claims against one clan after another as we passed by their villages or domiciles. By the time we arrived at the University eh was cutting down his own family and at the door of the university he found something bad to say about his brother. The moral of the story is that an attitude of “we are better than them” closes the mind to objectivity and is simply abhorring and ugly.
Reading the history of any country, and Jordan is no exception, will demonstrate that atrocities are not limited to a race or a group. Wise governments that desire to build a future for all do not label people because of the acts of the few.
Furthermore, no Jordanian should be able to classify others into one group and pass judgement upon them, no matter how righteous he/she thinks she is. Passing judgements upon others subsumes that one is superior to another which is outright silly; a mindset that should be avoided at all costs.
Another gem that my economics professors taught me in the US about discrimination 9there is a plethora of research on the topic of discrimination) is that it persists only if a group of people benefit from it; something we call: rentierism.
Rentierism is defined as the act of receiving payment or demanding it not because of the production and the exchange of a good or service but because of who you are. Therefore, a system that encourages rentierism fails the market economy through distortions and what we know as corruption, wasta, mahsoubieh, etc. Instead of market efficiencies emerges mediocrity in performance everywhere. In the global economy where states are so interdependent efficiency, creativity, and meritocracy, create competitiveness and future wealth.
To gain status, wealth or power simply because of your parents is wrong and unworkable in today's modern economies. If we want greatness for this country that we all love, we should let bygones be bygones and think within a social contract that aspires for making Jordan great, not a petty country where people recall, pass judgements upon groups and dissect a small country into clans of self proclaimed superiority of allegiance and loyalty. All one can do is have an incontestable love for his country and think of ways and means of making it great. Each of us acting from within our value-added mindsets and, consequently, ever improving and aspiring drives and capabilities can we make Jordan better.
On the question of making citizens of immigrants; the US innovation drive comes from the hordes of immigrants it receives annually. Our drive to encourage FDI was motivated by the need to receive and accept better management and technical skills, not simply money. We privatized JTC in order to invite better skills. What is wrong with having children of a Jordanian mother married to a foreigner receive citizenship when we grant that very right to wives of Jordanian men and their children.
It is so wrong to assume that a Jordanian can place himself as judge of whether another who holds the same nationality, this is why we have police, security forces, army and courts to try individuals not tag a people. Yes, passport grants citizenship. By the way I was away for twenty years, the last 15 years have been spent in Jordan writing about the economy and working in the policy kitchen. Shall we make passports into different colours and grant first class citizens, second class and third class? No, all Jordanians are Jordanian under the law. Be careful! In one Arab country where I served as ambassador I was elated that I was always received in the VIP lounge, that was until I discovered that there was another lounge called VVIP lounge. There was a better treated class of diplomats after all!
I don’t ascribe to conspiracy theories and I and any Jordanian is not in need of being judged as to his love for Jordan. No Jordanian is qualified to judge another in this respect or should even aspire to do so. We are all equal under the flag and the leadership and that is that—this is our Constitution. If one believes he or she is more equal, he should do so through hard work and delivering not empty false slogans that serve only to harm a social fibre we are trying so hard to parlay into infinite Jordan.
Sorry; I just realized wrote too much and may be repeted myself here and there, but as a friend of mine says: let's all unedit ourselves.

Thanks for the insightful comments Nadine. I strongly agree that the entire system needs an overhaul and taking it sector by sector is the best way to do it. At the same time we are fortunate to have a group (modest group) of people who are dedica...
